Welcome to Gran Canaria
As the third largest island in the Canaries archipelago, Gran Canaria is perfectly formed with its very own assortment of microclimates and a rich variety of landscapes. From wild rugged peaks and deep craggy ravines, to wispy dunes and long sandy beaches, around one-third of the island is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The majority of Gran Canaria’s beach resorts can be found along the south coast, with big-hitters like Puerto Rico and Playa del Inglés nudging up against smaller, more boutique resorts like Meloneras and dune-backed Maspalomas. There are fantastic beaches dotted around the island ranging from long, sweeping sandy bays lapped by the sparkling shores of the Atlantic Ocean, to tiny rocky coves offering a quiet secluded spot in blissful surroundings. Other must-visit holiday attractions in Gran Canaria include Palmitos Park near Maspalomas or Tamadaba National Park where one can go for a day of hiking.
Gran Canaria enjoys a rich culture and history, perhaps represented best of all in one of its top attractions; the Cueva Pintada Museum & Archaeological Park. The ‘Painted Cave’ was carved by the ancient Canarii people from volcanic material, and is decorated with prehistoric, geometric patterns across the walls. The cave and museum are located in the heart of town, only 27 km west of Las Palmas, and 50 km away from Gran Canaria Airport. The painted cave is wheelchair friendly, and a perfect day out for all ages. Videos and reconstructions of local life are on view in the museum to show visitors what life was like in Gran Canaria before it was conquered in 1483 by the Crown of Castile, and used as an important step towards the expansion of the Spanish Empire.
